Composition

The Council’s composition:

The National Council of Education consists of 68 members, out of which one President elected by the Portuguese Parliament by absolute majority of its Members; 60 representatives from different institutions; and 7 members co-opted by the Council among experts recognized for their scientific and pedagogic merit, who are chosen by absolute majority of its effective members.

Taking office:

The President takes office before the president of the Portuguese Parliament, within the following eight days after having been elected, while the Council members take office before the President of the Council.

Mandate:

The Council members are elected for a three year renewable period, their mandate is irremovable and they can not cease functions before its end, except in cases of death or permanent physical impairment, in case of resignation or mandate loss.
